Re: Water Pressure

That generally works however on some engines it does not. It all depends on the water flow through the engine. Here is how it was done on my 75 HP Merc. If you are adding one, the idea is to also replace the water pump impeller at the same time. You then take WP readings at idle, mid range, and WOT and note those readings. Any deviation from those numbers in the future indicates the impeller needs attention. Otherwise you have no idea what normal water pressure is for your engine (no two engines will run the same pressure -- close but not the same).

Re: Water Pressure

I would certainly make sure you have good flow from the tell tale before replacing a gauge. Like I said, some work ok that way, some don't. If you have an air compressor, set the regulator for about 10PSI and give the gauge a shot. If it reads 10 PSI the gauge is not shot. Don't spend money unless you are sure it needs to be spent.

Re: Water Pressure

i recently had the lower unit serviced and i have a good stream. i am going to blow the line out with an air compressor to see if it is clogged. i dont have a regulator so i'd better not blow to the gauge huh?
