My friend next door went out today on his sea ray, He said it fired right up
as always. then! about two miles out he had seen that a few boaters were
waving so he waved back! He said then he could tell they were not jestering hi
they were saying hey!!!! your motor is smokeing and on fire!:( So I walked over just now as he said he thought it was a wire short and fried everything.
I seen where it did melt the coils some and a few wires and he said the
back of everything was glowing heads, flywheel, plugs. But there is not short
I checked, I know the water pump was working we went out last week in it and it
was peeing water great. I also checked comp, for him when he got the boat
a few weeks ago and it was130 on all 4 cyl's...Now it has 30 on port side and
40shh on strb. side. So I have to think the water pump went out while underway?
I know if fact he had 50:1 oil gas mix fresh, and it ran like a new motor before
this happened.

So I wonder if maybe head gaskets? Or he fried the whole powerhead?
HELP!

Remove the cylinder heads for inspection, perhaps you'll be lucky. Repair all melted wiring, replace coils if needed, tighten all bolts etc.

Install a new water pump and thermostat.

Might be a good idea to make sure that your overheat warning system is put back in proper condition before you go out again also.

I agree he said he did not here a alarm but with me not being there who knows? I just can't see how one mile of
running it when he said the pee hole was streaming hard when he took off could do that much damage. It did get HOT!
I can see that but that evinrude was a sweet running motor last week. it's like a 1984 bubble back that comp, was
on the money and ran smooth and now this.
thanks for your input...

Always possible he ran over a plastic bag and that it got stuck on the lower unit. I had that happen-and got a hot horn warning for no apparrent reason. After I slowed down, the horn silenced, but immediately started again when I put the boat back on plane. I had to stop again, then raise the engine to see the problem and get the plastic bag off. Thankfully, that hot horn did it's job.

Yes I wish I knew if his alarm went off, could had been a bag never know.
I told him to pull the heads so maybe he will get that done where I can have a look.
