Tony it would be better to have new gaskets, but if the engine has water comeing out of the exhaust reliers on the back then it is pumping water and the tell tale is pluged---Bob

Hi
bob i think the reson for the water in the exaust was the fact that the gasket fitthe was stretched.
Any idea about the impropella

Tony if the engine has water coming out of the exhaust releif holes, thats the two holes up at the top of the mid section of the engine, that mwans the the w/pump is pumping water to the powerhead, so your problem is the water is not coming out of the telltale on the cowling, if thats the case, then some times the fitting on the cowl gets plugged, unplug the hose from it to find if and see if water comes out of the hose if it doesn't when look to see if the hose fastens to the bottom of the exhaust cover I bet it does, try to blow it out with air, good luck some times it works sometime you have to plug it and hook the hose to the fitting on the block if you have one. If of course there is no water at the idle releifs and the engine is geting hot, you must redo the w/pump--Bob

Re: water pump 50 hp merc all sorts of probs help

Hi bob
I think im with you now.
When i said water coming out of the exaust i ment from the propella.
I also think that was due to my sad attempt at changing the water pump.(leaky gasket)
I have had a long hard think and decided to strip the water pump right down to the nitty gritty.
I have ordered new gaskets and a new plate.
I also have a master plan on how i will test it this time before putting it all back together again and await dissapointment.
Tell me if im crazy but what i thought i will do is cover the top of the drive shaft with a cloth, stick a nice fitting socket on it, plug it into my drill to rotate the driveshalf, attach my muffs and check for any leaks and make sure water is rising up out of the water pipe.
Wish me luck!!!
I want to get this on the water and let her rip
