I need to replace the water pump on my 69 johnson 6hp. I opened the lower unit, and of course, I've got to release the shifter rod. I've got a repair manual which is supposed to include the "69", but the instructions are vague as to how to release the lower half from the motor. I do see two clamps on the rod, which may release the upper half from the lower half. I assume the drive shaft will just come out. I am affraid that if I release the rod at the clamp, I will never get it back together. Removal of the power head looks like a bear. Some of those bolts are really hidden. Any suggestions??

Marv....the clamp you see is the shift rod connector. One end must be released to drop the lower unit. No big deal. It'll go back together. Take a screw driver and open the clamp up a little so the upper rod will slide into the hole easy. Also, make sure the slot in the rod is aligned with the hole in the connector before you put the screw back in.
