Hi. I wonder if anyone out there can help me on a couple of issues relating to my 1978 johnson (35EL78R).

I recently attempted (with the help of a manual) to replace the impeller on this engine. I replaced it ok and made sure the blades on impeller were in a clockwise direction. (Im not sure if this was the right direction)

When doing this, the shaft popped outa the gearcase so i slotted it back in the gearcase. Im not sure if i done this correctly either.

Anyway. I fixed everything together and started the engine. I found that the engine only pumped water when in gear. It wouldnt pump water when in neutral. Would any of the above be the cause of this? Please help as i dont believe its anything serious.

Im also looking for a starter motor bracket for this engine as the bracket i have on the engine is broken. Thanx in advance

in gear or out of gear should not matter the driveshaft is turning ne time the engine is running. so therefore thewaterpump is alway pumping, sounds like you have some other issues like you did not get something line back up quite right
