Water pump bad?

This is the first time I have ever ran it out of the water. I have a set of ear muffs hooked to a garden house clamped on to the lower unit but I am not getting any water out of the spray tube (I don't know the proper term). Does the engine have to warm up before it comes out of the top? This engine never sprayed much out up there.

Is there any way to test the water pump without tearing apart the lower unit?

Thanks for any help.

It should not have to warm up, you should get water right away. What is "it"? Check if pee hole is clogged. Good luck, Joe

Probably a long shot, but are you sure you put the muffs on the water intake and not the exhaust ports?

Just asking because I done that the first time I used muffs, I wasn't getting any water until I put them in the right place.....I know, I know...SHT  :D

My 150's take a minute or two before water comes from the telltale port. If you have the muffs in the correct place, give it some time.

Is your motor overheating? Any hot horn or other indication of running hot?

Joe,
sorry "it" meant water. What I was trying to say was does it take a while to get water out of the pee hole?

IBFishing,
I am fairly confident (I looked in a manual) that I have them on the right spot. The exhaust vents are above the prop and the water intakes are pretty much straight back from the prop, right?

Jim,
I have not let it run long enough for it to overheat. I doubt I have let it run for a full minute for fear of damaging something. By "hot horn" do you mean like a warning buzzer or idiot light? If so then no, but this boat has set for several years and I would not want to rely on something like that working. Are there any other indications that it is running hot before the engine locks up or something?

Thanks for the help so far guys.

Steve

harwich,

You are correct that the water intake is the closest to the prop.

I assume by this statement, it works fine when in the water? If it worked fine when you had it in the water, then your tell-tale hose may be clogged. Try running a thin wire through it to clear any obstuctions it may have.

Sorry, I forgot to mention in this post that It has not been ran in or out of the water for several years.

I will try cleaning the tell-tale hose.

Thanks

Since engine hasn't been ran is quite some time, I would replace the impeller as it is probably deteriorated. But still be shure your tell-tale is clean.

Remove the motor cover and start it with water running to muffs. If you can touch the heads, it's not overheating. You haven't said what motor, but the V6's generally use a 143° F thermostat, and most motors operate ~ 140 to 160°F. That's an easy way to tell if you're overheating.
