water pump base plate doubled?

I am replacing the water pump on my E40ELCO and when I removed the base plate from the foot it appears that there are two plates gjued together with permatex. Is this a trick of the trade or just some simple oversight from a previous owner? I plan on intalling the new plate with the kit when it arrives but need to know if this is something I should be concerned with.

If your talking about the stainless steel impellor plate, I'm at a loss as to why they would use two of them. Does anything else look out of place, such as repairs under the plate, or any changes to the impellor drive key?

So are there three gaskets? You should have a gasket between each mating surface. If only two, it may be an oversight.

Re: water pump base plate doubled?

The motor has been run in brackish water, everyhting looks ok under the plate(s). I am just thinking that whoever replaced the pump the last time didn't know to take the old plate off and replace with new one (both are stainless). I had a hard time getting the impeller off the shaft and believe it was because it was riding on the high side of the key race due to the extra plate. I am an aircraft mechanic by trade and just wondered if piggy backing a plate was a trick of the marine trade. OBTW the under side of the bottom plate is green (looks like zinc chromate primer) is this peculiar in anyway?

Thanks again

Re: water pump base plate doubled?

There was a trick I saw used on saltwater engines when the casting that the impeller plate rides on got boogered up/corroded. You could machine down the casting surface the depth of an extra plate to get a smooth mating surface, then mount two plates instead of one. The zinc chromate is an additional attempt to stop the corrosion from happening again.

Re: water pump base plate doubled?

that is good info, I will look closely at the surface on the foot to see if any of the casting has been removed. Thank you the info. This site has managed to keep my boat ready to fish for a couple of years now and my my kids enjoy every second of it.

Cheers,
