I don't know how far you've gotten but a lot of times on larger outboards there is a bolt you have to remove that is hidden under the water intake screen or under the trim tab. You might have to unhook the shift linkage behind the carburetor to get the LU to completely drop. Smaller HP outboards you can drop the LU a couple inches and undo the shift shaft coupler and the LU will drop out completely. Your motor could be either way.
