Tried this in the sticky but no answer yet so I am posting as a new thread...

Here is a question, I am trying to change the impeller on my 87 Force 85HP. No problems getting it apart... Have the new kit and now I cant get the old housing off the shaft. There is a flare towards the top of the shaft that looks like it is part of the shaft???? The rubber and Teflon gasket in the housing seems to be too small to get it over it. I am guessing it might come off or do I just try and force it off (Which seems to be silly)??? The new housing also has the same set up and looks like it will not fit down over the shaft "flare" Nothing about it in the SOLEC I have.. Any Ideas? Help??

Thanks
Scott

Sorry for the bad pic, my cell phone sucks

i looked through my clymer manual and it look like you have to take the two screws ff the top and it should come off no problem. there should be a lower water tube seal at the top and you take that off and the rest should come off easy, after that there is the water pump seal, locating disc and cap screw, then the water pump seal and then you should be able to see the impeller. hope this help.

Thanks, I might be missing what you noting.. At this point I can see the impeller and I have the pump apart and can slide the housing and the impeller up the shaft. I am having issues in trying to slide the housing up OFF the crankshaft as there is a "Flare" in my way The picture is of the housing at the top of the shaft but the "flare" is not letting it come off and I did not want to force it too much.... I will go take a look and see if I see any screws though..

I suspect the "flare" you are writing about is the steel collar for the drive shaft seal at the engine crankshaft. Some of these are tight and appear to be part of the shaft. Take a small hammer or something flat like a bar of steel, slide it along the shaft as you circle the shaft, and tap off the collar. Look for the black rubber crankshaft seal. It may have dropped out or may still be in the midleg. It will be a cylinder about 1 X 2 inches and usually has a bulge in the center.

Looked at the photo--yeah, that's what it is! Steel collar.

That is exactly what it is... THANKS!! I just did a little "persuation" and it popped off! Now the new set up is about to go on as soon as I get some lubercant to get the impeller into the new housing correctly and I will test it in a bit..

Thanks again,

WOW, huge flow difference in my Tell Tale... Started shooting water just about while it was starting and the flow was strong! The old impeller was not in great shape and I thnk that was the main cause of my issuses. I will take it out on the water today or tomorrow evening....

Thanks again..

It's a tight fit...also when you go to put the impellar back in the housing you should lube it up it's also a tight fit and I had a struggle to get it in there. It seemed easier to put the impeller on the shaft first and push the housing onto it.

Scratch that lol I didnt read the whole thread and didn't realize you already finished.
