Water pump doesn't work on high throttle

Hello.

I have a 1983 Johnson outboard 25 hp. I have been having problems with a consistent steam of water peeing out while driving. I bought a new impeller and replaced it. I have noticed a bit more volume coming out but at high speeds no water comes out at all. Is this normal? Thanks for your help!

amvaneyk,

Is this engine new to you?

I am not too familiar with this engine, but, I suspect water should be peeing at all times, especially at high speed. If no water at high speed you can overheat and ruin something in a big way. Under normal operation you should be able to touch the engine block. It'll be warm but it should not be HOT. Same with the water coming out.

Is there a tell tale water nipple exiting the lower cover or does all the water come out of the exhaust?

Couple things:
1 I assume you have the impeller drive dog in place properly since the pump does work to some degree.
2 You may have clogged water intake screen in the lower unit.
3 You may have a collapsed water tube grommet at the top side of the water tube entering the engine block (power head). You will have to split the power head from the exhaust housing to be sure.
4 You may have a collapsed water tube grommet at the bottom end of the water tube exiting the water pump housing. You may have put in a new lower grommet when you replaced the impeller (?) .

Keep us posted.

Re: Water pump doesn't work on high throttle

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes the engine is new to me. The drive dog is in the correct place since water does come out while idling. The water comes out of the exhaust. If the screen was clogged would any water come out at all? When I remove the screen I see nothing blocking. The collapsed tube on the top side is a possibility since when I took the lower unit off the copper water pipe stayed seated into the block. I was surprised that the water pump kit did not come with a replacement grommet but it looked in good shape to my inspection. Thanks again for the help.

If you have water coming out w/exhaust above the waterline when you speed up, you're likely good, as that water has passed through the thermostat. You may have gunk in the indicator nipple, hose, or nipple attached to powerhead.

I have seen plugs in the pee-pee hole from bees. They like small, round dark holes.
I have also had them in the exhaust port of weed whacker mufflers which will cause them not to start.
Pesky little buggers!!!

Did you install the key on the impeller correctly?
