hoping you guys can aid me in what i think is just a dumb move on my part.. i ran my boat with the ears on the lower unit the other day to flush the engine out after coming in.... It was pumping water fine tellail and head were cool... today i started the boat like i always do on land before taking it to go out in the water and noticed the engine was warm and the tail tell wasnt pumping water out.. I let it run only maybe 2 minutes and still no water pumping.. so i decided man the impeller must have went bad.. I pull the lower unit and take the housing off and the water pump impeller was perfect... So its still apart and im now thinking what else could have caused it not to pump water up... or maybe i just didnt have the ears in position correctly... Thermostats New any suggestions... .THE ENGINE IS A 1988 85 HP FORCE... i just dropped 400 on rebuiding the tilt trim setup... what could this be..

thanks

Re: water pump flow

Take out the thermostat and flush water from that hole and see if water comming out the bottom. Or put the muffs on tight and run motor.

Sometimes you just don't get enough water from the hose.Make sure there is enough pressure.Take it to the lake/river/ocean(fill out the profile) and start it.J

I just did mine and the above statement is correct. I barely had a trickle coming out of my motor with muffs. It would overheat after less than a minute of running. I took it to the lake and at just idle a forceful amount of water came out. It never overheated at the lake.

Ditto these engines do not run well with muffs. I got the huge rectangular muffs like this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...r_id=124647357982&ua=WVF?&itemid=330459404978

I still wouldnt run the motor to long with muffs period if they shake off while you are putting the gear away its big trouble. I invested in a big rubbermaid tote to use at the end of the year when I am running the carbs dry etc. With the large muffs I usually get enough water flow to see the upper exhaust spitting out steam w/a tiny bit of water. If you take out the thermostat to check water flow I would ditch those flatheads and get some hex bolts or allen bolts in the highest grade usually grade 8 is the highest strength bolt HD or lowes carries.

If you're using muffs you should set everything up and turn the water on and let it sit for a few minutes so the water will work it's way up the system. Start and see what happens. One more thing...don't go above idle or rev the engine while on muffs.
