water pump HELP

well I'm back again still playing with the water pump which is new ( Impeller). I've taken this apart 4 times and it still runs hot and locks up. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG SOMEONE WALK ME THROUGH THIS...PLEASE ARE IS THE THERMOSTAT BAD AND WHERE IS THE THERMOSTAT??? HELP

MY MOTOR IS A 1969 JOHNSON 6HP ROCKET RICH

Thermostat is found on top of the cylinder head.---Cover with 3 screws.---------If motor has locked up a number of times you may have done serious damage to a fine motor.------Did 3 of those 6 hp motors over the winter.

WHAT DAMAGE DID I DO ??? IT LOCKED UP 4 TIMES. CHANGED THE IMPELLER, SPARK PLUGS, FUEL PUMP, AND ALL SEEMS GOOD WHAT NEXT?

Possibilities, Scored cylinder, scored piston, broken rings.

how high us the water level in the barrel? halfway up the leg?

Dumb questions. Did you miss the water tube? As post #8 stated water must be half up the leg. Is the keeper for the impeller in place?

the keeper is so tiny I can't see how it would do anything but I'll take it down again. missing the water tube maybe...

The T shaped drive pin does an adequate job of turning the impeller.------Folks asked / commented on the water level in your test tank.---No replies to that important point.
