We were told by the guy at the counter in Orlando that we shouldn't believe internet info. ha ha. He said when we installed the new impeller and reseated the SS waterpump housing to the lower unit NOT to use permatex or Mercruiser brand adhesives. They were not necessary. We had no flow to the engine. Removed the lower unit and hooked it up to the hose and water flows out of the base of the waterpump SS housing like a flood. I take it the man was an idiot?

I take it that it is a Mercruiser? You need to give a little more information. As for not believing internet info, I have yet to recieve any bad info from this site. Don just posted a link that will ans all of your questions in a prior post. Its under merc 140 problems. I was wondering how to split my outdrive and now I got it done. Keep up the good work Don

Re: Water Pump Housing Gaskets

I looked at that other post, and with the discription here about a SS housing, I would guess he has an Alpha I Gen II.
It's also obvious he doesn't know what he has.
You "SHOULD NOT" need sealant on the gaskets of the Gen II water pump. If you do need sealer, you have done something wrong.
I've never had to use sealer on one. My bet is there is something else wrong besides the water pump.
Gil009, you really need to look at a manual.
Heres an Alpha I Gen II manual for you.
Merc Manual #14

Re: Water Pump Housing Gaskets

Thanks guys. I was in a hurry and forgot to add this to the other post.

Yes, its an Alpha I Gen II. It doesn't take sealant, and there is a weep hole that was producing the water. That was normal.

The guy at the shop was very negative about the internet probably because he viewed it as competition. I have always gotten great info here.

As to the manual, I did purchase one from the guy at the shop. Got back and looked more closely and it was for the wrong drive. Only up to 92. Have to take it back next week.

We just got the original problem resolved. We had the "pickup tube" that connects the waterpump assembly to the copper tube that runs to the upper unit disconnected. We had installed it at the wrong angle. So, no water was getting to the main water hose. That corrected and a new thermostat installed we have a purring engine running about 170 at idle on the hose. Next test will be the lake.

Don S, I downloaded that PDF file, but only got the cover sheet and one more page. Can you repost it?

Thanks.

When you take the manual back to him tell him the people on the internet knew which one it was. There are a lot of places on the net that you do get bad info though.

That manual does not open as the compete manual. Just run your cursor over the page to find the different links and sections on the different pages.

I understand your parts mans problem with the internet. I have also read a lot of bad informaion given on this site, and other similar sites by people that just give their experiences. Many of the replies/experiences give a bandaid fix that will get you by for a bit, but you want a complete proper fix. The trick is, you have to know which is which.
