Water pump - How to remove Locating pins

I bought a '98 Yamaha 115 that looked extremely clean until I started pulling it apart. Getting the pump housing and the impeller and the woodruff key were way harder than they should have been. Got a little bit of corrosion going on and who knows when or if they've ever been replaced before. The locating pins for the pump housing are rusted so I've got them soaking right now in PB Blaster. (good stuff) The rebuild kit included new pins so my question, is it worth it to try and remove these pins and if so, what is the best way to do it?

Also the insert is still in the plastic pump housing and again is in there pretty well. Is there an easy way to get that out?

Thanks for your help!

I'd grab them with some vise-grip pliers...should come out O.K.....re-assemble everything with some waterproof marine grease. That Quicksilver 2-4-C grease is good stuff, especially if you're running in salt water.....

That's good, but I also have wondered why they include these replacement pins in the water pump kits?....

Re: Water pump - How to remove Locating pins

The rebuild kit for the small 9.9 Yamaha 1990, has a lot of extra stuff too, in my view. I see 4 bolts I think they are, what are the pins? Is this just "Big boy" stuff?

Robert, you mention water proof grease. I know when assembling a new impeller it is recommended to put on a light grease coat on the impeller and the housing inside to lube the impeller until water starts to flow. Some grease is also recommended for the top end of the drive shaft (again on the smaller engines is all I have looked at). Can't this just be any old auto cut or chassis grease? Also looking for recommendation on lower unit grease/oil GL-5 or 90 weight Marine ... other?

Re: Water pump - How to remove Locating pins

My water pump rebuild kit had new bolts and locating pins....I used them, but the old ones were just fine....maybe these new bolts and pins are more for saltwater motors with lots of corrosion. The locating pins are just steel dowels mainly I guess to help align and hold the water pump in precise location during operation. Any marine specified "lower unit oil" should be fine...plenty of different ones to choose from, or the Walmart brand. I believe that especially for saltwater usage, a grease like Quicksilver 2-4-C could be worth having a tube handy, and for bolt threads, water pumps, assembly purposes, a 6 ounce tube might last you for years....A corroded bolt or fastener that breaks off when you try to remove it can be a real headache and expensive to drill, re-tap, helicoil, whatever....Good grease is cheap!
