WATER PUMP impellar replace, but...

I've a 1955 Johnson, 10hp. Viewed the diagram in manual to replace impeller. Bought a Sierra 18-3002 Impeller form iBoats to replace the severly damamged old impellar. Got the LU off and back on. Can't see any water peeing out the exhaust and motor behaves like its getting hot. Used muffs for water, then filled a large trash can full of water. No difference.

Are there some common problems for why or how I might have failed to put it back together correctly? Don't want to run it with out water as that's how the impellers fail.

1. Obstructions in water tubes?
2. Failure to align water tube correctly when re-assembling?
3. Suction somewhere not happening?
4. I notice there is a notch on the brass ring interior of the impeller, but no apparent cooresponding notch on the drive shaft...did I miss something and the impellar is not turning?
5. Any thoughts?

them leg of the motor has to be submerged 1/2 way, the water pump is high, and not self priming. there is either a pin or key that fits in the slot on the impeller brass hub, it goes into the drive shaft, so your impeller might not be turning.

Tashasdadddy, ok..good insight...best remedy is to re-lower the unit and check for pin alignment...I'll check out diagram. Will the 68 model pin fit my 55 you say?

after I re-assemble how can I prime the pump? or if the impeller is now turning will it suck water once I submerge in barrel of water?

them leg of the motor has to be submerged 1/2 way, it will not work on muffs at all.

Just how bad was the old impeller? Did it break up into small pieces?

Yes, disintegrated I'd say...I'ver checked for the pin and slot alignment and its good...I've re-attached the LU and its pisses water out the side hole and through the side window where you uncouple the linkage (i didn't screw it back in just case)...which makes me believe its pumping water but I"ve mis-aligned the water tube..as the motor still behaves hot...What's the trick to aligning the water line up in the mid- unit? I can blow air through tube in the LU so I think its clear...the trick seems to be aligning up three invisible connections...shaft, linkage and water tube....

Re: WATER PUMP impellar replace, but...

Tasha hit the nail on the head with that advice,,, also it could possibly be an alignment issue, check the water tube grommet if you installed a new one, i have a 54' 10hp and when i replaced the grommet with a new one "it didnt fit correctly". i bought it seperately from the impeller. The water tube would not fit into the grommet no matter how hard i pushed, even though it fit the water pump housing good. I found my spare grommet and used it instead ,but when i returned the grommet dealer said it would fit and reluctantly gave my money back. it might be a long shot but something you might want to check out.Cheers! It goes together easier if you put the water tube up to the powerhead first. Then when the lower unit is slid into position the lower end of the tube will be visible to enter the water pump grommet. Put some grease on the tube and rubber grommets.

right...I'll give that a go and fit the tube up into the mid unit first...should there be a grommet on both ends of the water tube...? Diagram says so...I'll have to find or replace the grommet....more soon...BPC

Re: WATER PUMP impellar replace, but...

I know that when I slide my 1975 9.9Hp Evinrude LU back up, the copper tube always aligns perfectly and slides right into the grommet of the water pump (I usually have the grommet greased for easy entry). With my 1961 5.5Hp Johnson I kind of have to take my third hand and align the tube to the grommet myself just before the LU pushes into place. Since I don't have that third hand I seem to remember having a little fun with it, but my point was, if I didn't consiously address this, it would not have aligned.

I know this because with the 5.5Hp I have to take the powerhead off to disconnect the shift rod. The first time I shoved the LU back up and bolted it on, I was lucky enough to think of taking a flashlight and shine it down from the top where my powerhead would go next and noticed that the tube was not in this grommet. It really would have annoyed me greatly if I had then put the powerhead back on and had the sucker on my boat with it in that condition (I am sure there was even a little bit of profanity emited when I noticed it at this stage).

Just my thoughts. I suspect a 1955 might need attention to this detail as well, but I do not own one, so I can't say for sure that it is your problem. Good luck.

Re: WATER PUMP impellar replace, but...

Allright!! re-dropped LU and cleaned debris from old impeller out of housing and tube....re-inserted tube into Mid unit by itself so I could see the grommet and hole...then the LU fit right in, second try with a twist of the drive shaft!

Great advice on the water-tube tip!

Now it pumps like Niagara falls! I can't believe how much water its pumping. Can keep my knuckles on the engine while running very cool.

Thanks for the help gents!

Off to the lake! BPC
