I am replacing the impeller and all associated parts (gaskets, housing, etc.). I was very surprised that all the bolts came out so easy. This has definitely been done to this motor before. I have a Clymer manual so it's general in its procedures. Please try to bear with me and try not to fall asleep reading this message. Just want to do things correctly.

Now for some questions for all the experts.

The kit came with a gasket for the impeller plate (to the lower unit). The manual says to use a new gasket "if gasket is used". When I disassembled the housing and plate there was no gasket. I just want to confirm I should not use the one in the kit (as the manual says) and just use some sealer.

The manual also says to replace the inner exhaust housing seal. The kit didn't come with one. Should I get a new one or use the one I have. It looked pretty good. Same question with the shift rod seal.

I scraped the crud off the mating surfaces (lower unit to upper unit and impeller housing to lower unit) as best as I could but didn't want to spend the rest of the weekend getting every little bit off. Can I lightly sand it with 320 grit to clean the crud off?

The last question regards the sealing of everything. Can I use Permatex Ultra Black High temp RTV or should I get a tube of the OMC adhesive M? If I need a new inner exhaust housing seal then I will get the OMC M at the same time and use it. Also, I am assuming I should use a sealer for the lower unit to upper unit. Can I use the same stuff for the bolts or do I need the OMC gasket sealing compound?

Thanks in advance.

If the inner exhaust housing seal looks bad - yes replace it and it is sold seperately from the water pump kit.

Many water pump kits contain gaskets for several different applications so there may be some that you don't need. That is one of the reasons that it is better to get the OMC shop manual specific for your motor.

I use Sealer 1000 or the OMC stuff but there are equivalents. You do need to clean the crud off of mating surfaces but need not be fenatical about it. You should use some of the sealer on the threads of the bolts but not on the mating surface between the lower and intermediate leg. By the way it is normal for water to come out of this seam when running on the muffs.
