Things I've learned on iboats...
1. If you don't know when the impeller was changed it's ready for replacement.
2. Yes, buy a factory manual. I did and it's the best money I spent. (also, I have a parts manual on order as my engine is old.)
3. Changing the impeller isn't too difficult with the proper manual and some degree of mechanical apptitude.
4. This forum offers some of the most knowledgable boat advice available.(short of going through outboard mechanic school yourself).

Good luck. I'm sure the experts will be along with real advice, I'm just chiming in.
John

I think you could do a search on "impeller" and read for a week about the various opinions on impeller replacement.

I think the general concensus would be....as noted by alden...if you don't know when it was last replaced, now is a good time.

Once replaced, I would say every two seasons would be reasonable. If you are running in harsh conditions a lot (silty water, etc.) maybe more often.

Cheers,

Brew
