How often should I get my impeller changed on my 2007 Mercury 9.9 hp four stroke? Motor was made in 2007 and bought in 2008. I have the original impeller in it still. Is it good practice/economy to change the impeller even if the water stream looks normal and water temp of the stream is not hot?

ww;

Some of them will last a long time but for such an inexpensive part vs the cost of a powerhead, I examine mine every year and if there is no problem, I change every two years.

If I were you, I would change it before this coming season as this will be it's fourth season.

I changed my 9.9 1994 last summer for the first time. The one I took out was in perfect shape still. I suppose it depends on the usage, hours, type of water, was it run dry etc.

Re: Water Pump Impeller replacement intervals?

hello,
i also got an old white(62) 9.8, and am just in the process of 'checking it out'.
and, after i was told that it sat in boat house for the last 20 yrs., my first thought was replacing the water pump impeller. i got it all opened up, but to my surprise, it looks brand new?
the inside of the pump is shiny and looks like it has only a few hours on it, sooooooooo, what do i do?
of course the answer is obvious, from all i read, change the impeller----better than cooking the power head. still makes me wonder why some people change the impeller every year----anyway,,,,,,

I change mine every year for peace of mind, nothing else.

was just at a dealer(40 YRS+), and he said changing an impeller every year is beyond 'overkill'.....this is from a dealer......
he did say, every 4 yrs is what they do.....

Re: Water Pump Impeller replacement intervals?

Since I have been reading on this forum, I assumed that you needed to change it every 1-2 years. My 1997 Bayliner has never had it changed, so I decided I should change it out this year. Busted it open and guess what, it still looked brand new. Since I already bought a new impeller, and had everything taken apart, I threw the new one on there. I think that they last a lot longer then people make it seem here. Going 14 years is probably not a good idea, but every 4-5 years would be sufficient.

Since we are talking about mercury motors, if the tell tale is still good and solid at idle then the water pump is good. On our '74 merc 150 the water pump hasn't been changed for at least 10 years.

I try to change mine every two years on a 1985 175 mariner.
I have seen small cracks on the inside of the rubber fins after taking a closer look.
Better safe than sorry.

Russian roulette has a 1 in 6 chance, impeller change basically same thing, a lot of people will get lucky, but do you want to be the one who doesn't, change it evey two years 50 bucks top from dealer, or have a possible meltdown. Remember god protects alcoholics idiots and children. Would you rather paddle a mile or walk one, and walking doesn't involve currents, wind and other idiot boaters.

My dad has a 1968 merc 650 which we are pretty certain still has the original impeller, still runs fine. That being said I do agree waiting 43 years is a bit to long but also makes me think that every few years might be a little too often. Anyway just FYI.

Not true. I have a 94 Mariner 60 that had good pee water at idle yet it would overheat at idle because the impellar was stiff and had taken a set in the blades. Worked fine at anything above idle. It did take 15 years to get to that state however.

Re: Water Pump Impeller replacement intervals?

Some motors have problems with impeller failure. If you run the motor without water you can wipe one out quickly. The 9.9 doesn't have that problem. To replace it every year is a waste, and if you don't know what you are doing you have a good chance of creating other problems. Always be aware of your motors operation. Put a temp alarm (any kitchen supply store $30) on the head. Set it 10 degrees over running temp and when it starts to go off then replace it. I bet you will get more than 10 years out of it. Always check any strange noises, vibrations, or leaks. I change my 4 stroke oil twice a season that makes sense to me and I know that is also overkill but I will not have lubrication problems. I still have 175# compression on my 05 15hp 4 stroke (same engine)

It all depends on the water you are running. I run hole shots in less than 2 foot water/ sand/ muck.
Duckhunting.
That is why my impellar is changed, so often. my .02
But I get on plane in like a10 seconds, with a 2 stroke 25 hp merc 16 seanyph full of decoys.

Re: Water Pump Impeller replacement intervals?

having read all of the above while watching the Oilers slaughtering the Blackhawks(8 to 2 in the second), I am now convinced that the -more than likely original- impeller in our '59 Mark 35 A, is due for a change-LOL---I mean 52 yrs., is just pushing it.
but seriously,I agree, $12.50 is a lot cheaper than a 'melt down',,,,,
