Water Pump? Indicator and suction

On my outboards motor (78 Johnson 70hp) is the water that comes out of the indicator at all accurate to how much water is flowing through and cooling the motor. I have always had late 60's outboards and so i want to know if people can use the "pee hole" (local mechanics term:) to tell if their water pump is working.

also how is the suction created to cool the motor. I have replaced my impeller before but it didnt appear to have very curved blades. they appeared to be straight up.

thanks everyone!

Re: Water Pump? Indicator and suction

the blades are straight, but the housing is off center of the drive shaft, this creates the bend and straighten, to push the water thru the motor.

the pee stream is an indicator that the impeller (WP) is pumping water. It is not and indicator that the thermostats are opening and cooling the block. you have a warning horn for running hot. if you have good pee stream, and run hot, 1st check is the tstats. then compression, in case you blew a head gasket. the exit water most of it goes out the prop with the exhaust.

Thanks I didnt think of the thermostats. I guess i have some more reading to do in my manual which by the way sucks. Thanks Sel0c as I see nothing about thermostats in it.

Any advice on a better manual

Where are the thermostats located on my motor?

Sure, get an OEM manual (Fleabay or outboardbooks.com).

BTW, the telltale is vastly overrated. Pressure and temperature gauges are way more useful as indicators of cooling system functioning.
