I'm Installing a new water pump and I was wondering about the adhesives and gasket sealing compounds the manual calls for. Do you really need them or are they just there to keep the o-rings and gaskets in place? Thanks to all who reply.

Re: Water Pump Install Question

What model outboard?

Get yourself a can of BRP Gasket Sealing Compound. It will be a brown fluid and will have a built in brush in the lid. You should also get a tube of marine grease to put on the splines of the drive and prop shaft during re installation.

Re: Water Pump Install Question

Thanks for the reply, the motor is a johnson 150 1991. I have another question / problem. I got everything put back together, followed the oem manual step by step, and now I have an extra o-ring. Double checked the steps and parts diagram in book and don't see it anywhere. I put three on it during install, 1) Under the impeller cup. 2) Special shaped one around housing. 3) on top of drive shaft under splines. Thanks for any replies.

Often parts kits fit several models and may have an extra stuff to accomodate.

It's a BRP kit 18-3392. The O-ring is about an inch in dia. and is kinda thick? I didn't see it anywhere, everything is put back together and I'm to give it a try. I did put the one on the driveshaft in place.

Re: Water Pump Install Question

the OMC adhesive "M" specified for the junction of the lower unit and the midsection is obsolete, they've specified a 3m product (forget the name) as replacement - until I got some of that I used permatex #2 with no ill effects.

OK -There is an oring between the SS liner and the upper pump housing, an Oring under the impeller(on top of the wearplate), an oring (d-shaped) that seals the base of the upper housing and one on the driveshaft.

Re: Water Pump Install Question

Thanks to all who replied. I cranked the motor up and it wasn't peeing. So I had to take everything apart again. After close examination of the old kit I figured out the gasket went under the impeller on the top of the plate. At least it was a good learning experience, cup half full guy, I was able to drop foot, put o-ring in place and assemble it in an hour flat. First time took sveral hours. Again thanks to all.
