Has anyone installed a water pump on a 150 xp evinrude? If so do you pull the lower unit off or do it from the top of the engine? How hard is it? Thanks for any input!

Re: water pump install

Have a look at the FAQs or the Top Secret Files for a thread that will help.

You would drop the gearcase, after disconnecting the shift rod. For your first time a factory service manual would help. Check ebay or outboardbooks.com for a factory reprint.

been a long time since owned outboards but disconnect battery put engine in reverse gear and leave it there.. dont mess with any screws on bottom prop area... take the foot off shaft case below the engine.. should be a small plate behind it will be shift linkage undo one rod to drop the shaft and find impeller and replace ..

Depends on the age of engine, salt water use? and has the lower unit ever been removed. You HAVE to drop the lower unit to access pump. I just did my 1987 140 HP and it came apart fairly easily even though I use it in saltwater.Make sure you remove all the bolts holding lower unit before trying to drop the unit.Especially the one under the trim tab!! That one snapped when I tried to remove tab but I was able to remove it and complete the job. A 1/4 inch universal joint on a ratchet made removing the shift rod link easy.
the service manuals explain everything. If you are handy you should be able to handle it.

If you're going to do all this work yourself, an OEM factory service manual would be wise. That way you'll have it for future reference. Something always seems to break.
