water pump issue

Hello,
I have a 1979 mercury 90hp outboard
I just replaced the water pump on it yesturday. Is water supposed to squirt out of the rear, looks like two holes right above the lower unit. When I have the engine at idle only one hole squirts out water but it is very weak. Isn't it supposed to squirt out hard and fast? when I give it alittle gas it starts to pump out alittle bit harder.
Whats going on??? There is also a little bleeder type hose on the side of the motor and it is squirting water too. Is this a problem?

Any help will be appreciated

Thanks
Andy

The little bleed hose is your tell tale . t s suppose to squirt a steady stream of water. It should feel warm but not scald you. The more revs has your motor , the faster the impeller, the more pressure, the more water is going to come out the two ports. You can insall awater pressure gauge to monitor your pressure. As your impellor wears out or goes bad, there will be a noticable drop on your pressure gauge.

My 73 Merc 500 did the same thing...weaker stream at idle, went like a race horse at WOT. It's a Merc thing...just keep an eye on it regularly like ricksrster says...put a water pressue or temp gauge on it if it makes you nervous.

Thanks for the replies guys. I will put a temp and pressure gauge in. Is it hard to install? What is a decent brand?

I think im gonna remove the bottom end and try to clean out the ports with a coat hanger. Is this a good idea?

Thanks
Andy

Oh BTW does the motor have a factory installed warning system incase the engine overheats? I think someone told me that the engine will make a beeping noise. Is this true? The only gauge that I have is the RPM.

Thanks

just keep an eye on the tell tale, and make sure there is always water flowing out of it, I used a little piece of tube with some metal and bent it so that it shoots it in clear view if I just look back at my motor so its very obvious, also every once in a while just feel the water coming out of it as long as its just warm your fine, thats what its there for no need to install a bunch of guages....

Anyone have any ideas on this? ^

Thanks Jaymasta for your input. So basically the only water hole i have to worry about is that little rubber hose that sticks out of the side? what about the two rear ones that squirt out water too?

Those are bypass ports. You will get a mist of water out of those as well.

Would it be okay to use a air hose to shoot into the tell tale to try and clear it up a bit??

You can remove the rubber hose on the tell tale to clear it out. I have a pressure gauge instead of a tell tale that attaches right onto the water jacket and lets me know the PSI. I watch that and my tach. They are not costly and easy to install.

Thanks Bob, what is the ideal pressure range for the water?
