Hi All,
Brought a 1989 Evinrude 9.9 home from the dump this week. Appeared siezed, but was actually a bolt that had backed out from vibration, jamming up the flywheel. Put it back together with new plugs, and it fired right up. Now the bad news. Ran it in a tank, and no sign of water from pee hole, at all. Disconnected pee hose, still nothing. Blew down hose and did not appear to be obstructed, so I am thinking a water pump kit is due. I have never done one of these before and need some advice. I read in another post that some of the rebuild kits are a plastic housing/plate, but the one that I should use in salt water is a stainless heavy duty version. Would someone be able to supply me with that OMC part number? Motor specs call for a Champ J4C @ .30. I have a supply of Champ J6C plugs available, can I use them without damaging the motor? Another issue is the moron who heaved this motor off his truck broke the skeg and bent the prop. I removed the prop to find that the prop backing washer is solidly siezed to the prop shaft(PO obviously being a stickler for maintenance,LOL!). I have soaked it for two days with penetrating oil, but it will not move. Suggestions? I can probably just leave it, but it will only get worse as time goes on. Did not dare put heat to it due to its proximity to the seal behind it. Any info on any of these problems is very appreciated, as I am just learning. I really like this motor!!!!

Re: water pump kit

A couple of youtube links on skeg repair with different views on how to repair:

There are plenty more if you look.

As for the water pump kit, try this link: Shop Evinrude. You can also try purchasing through i-Boats as well, since they are hosting these web forums and it seems proper to consider supporting them.

Really the significance of the number on the plug, 4 vs 6, is a reference for heat range. A cooler heat range plug will generally perform better and prevent destructive detonation on an engine that will see more high rpm use, whereas a hotter plug works better and prevents fouling on a troller. I can't remember which is which, but I think the 4 is a hotter plug than a 6. Somebody correct me if I am wrong here. You should verify the correct plug for your use.

Best of luck with your project. One man’s junk is another man’s treasure.
