water pump leak

I've got a 2002 VP 4.3 GL-A and noticed a steady stream of water coming from just behind the impeller housing. So, I changed the impeller and installed a new sealing ring. Leak fixed for the next start up but when I started her up again after about a week to ready the oil for a change out, I noticed the leak appeared again, albeit signifigantly less now.

Before I removed the old sealing ring I noticed it was flush with the pulley face. It also felt like it had fused to the metal as I couldn't just pull it out in one peice. The little brass spring thing came out fine but the rubber part came out in pieces. I ended up using a flat headed screw driver to scrape off as much as I could.

Is the new sealing ring supposed to sit proud of the face of the pulley. Also, my impeller kit came with the lubrication, impeller and o-ring only. I see, however that there is a sealing washer that looks to finish the impeller. Old one didn't have one. Do I need one? Will this fix the leak?

I used all new Volvo parts ordered from my engine SN. Did I do something wrong that's easily fixable? Also, when I start her up I hear a squealing sound for a while then it stops. Is this symptom connected as well?

Sorry this is so long, I've just got a bunch of q's that are keeping me up at night.

I am not a VP guy, so I can't answer your question, I was just suprised that this went a full day with no responses. Hopefully somebody will be along soon with a useful response.
