In the process of replacing the water pump with the plastic housing on a 73 135 hp Evinrude, I have an O-Ring that is not accounted for in the manual, the tear down process, and no diagram with the new pump. It is 3/4" approximately O.D. What is its purpose?

TIA

does you drive shaft have an indentation right below the splines, there. suppose to keep exhaust gases out of the top end. is my understanding.

That's where it fit when I was looking for a home for it. There wasn't one there when I disassembled it, but it makes sense.

Thanks.

Leaving that thing out is what causes the splines to rust together so you can't get the lower unit off.

Re: Water Pump O-Ring

mine didn't have one either.

Since it's my thread, hijacking it should be just a misdemeanor offense. Do you know a way to replace the poppet and vernatherm without pulling the powerhead? I'm going to remove the bubble to install a water flow indicator. I'm trying to figure out if I can get to the bolts on the bottom with the motor intact, and, if so, will that give me enough clearance to get to the vernatherm housing?

Any thought will be appreciated.

There's no poppet valve on that motor. I don't think you need to remove anything to install a telltale. Try Dhadley on this forum for that.
