new boat to me....got a 120 mec. now its got a water pump on the motor and a inpeller in the stern drive like the lower unit on a outboard right? i know dont laugh but this is only my 2ed boat got burned good on the 1st so i traded for this one and it is a inboard i know about car motors but not much about boats...and if it has both how do you check them to make sure there in top working order now with muffs on its keeping around 140 to 150 in temp.if the gauge is right but have not had it in the water the guy i got it off of said he would recomend a new inpeller because he thought in the water it would get a little warm because with the muffs it is forcing the water in.. like i said i am new to boating and want to get on the water and make it back ok witch i have not to do yet...

put new impeller and base, housings. the top auto type pump just circlates water hardly ever need replaced, lower one every three years or so easy fix with the right info . pull the whole drive to replace the pump alot eaisier.

Test the impeller in the lake, not on muffs. Idle the engine, pull the inlet hose from the thermostat housing, let the water flow into a bucket for 1 minute. Do you get 5-6 quarts or more? No problem.

the impeller in your engine is pretty much a no need to service item. it has a weep hole in it just like a car. if it's bad, water will start weeping out the weep hole.
the impeller in your drive is likely a yearly inspection item. meaning yer supposed to go look at it and make sure it's in good shape, once a year. since they are not real easy to go look at, + a very important part of the cooling system. i replace mine yearly. look good or not.

if ya wanna get good at boats. get yourself the oem service manual for your rig and read away. go up to the adults only sticky. lots of good info in there. look at the winterization/summerization thread. lots of pm to do in those threads. imho, pm is the ticket to keeping your boat sea worthy so you have an enjoyable time on the lake. also keep reading iboats. you'll see lots of problems that folks have and the cures that others post up.. iboats can be a great part of educating yourself too.

take a boater safety class too. us power squadron or us coast gaurd aux. are two great places to learn much + meet others with similar interests. like boats and boating... ;)
