If it dies on the water ?

When you start the pump is under water and things are fine

BUT

when you get on plane the pump is then above water and any leaking gaskets would allow it to draw air and burn up quickly

tommays

Re: water pump problem

It's the water pump in the lower unit. I only ran it on the trailer hooked up to a flusher. I think I might have torqued it down too tight, compressing the impeller a little and it burned up. I noticed melted plastic at the top of the pump base under the slinger.

That is usually a sign of no water .Change the entire housing and wear plates.Follow the directions exactly on getting the housing on over the impeller by turning the drive shaft.I dont recall which way to turn it off hand but the manual will have it.You should coat the inside of the housing with a little marine grease or dish detergent for lubrication.Make sure to turn on the water to the muffs BEFORE starting the motor and turn off the motor BEFORE you turn off the water.Try duct taping the muffs on so the water flow is uninterupted.

Rotate clockwise while pushing housing on to impeller. Are you sure the gaskets are on right to line up with passageways?
