I rebuilt the lower end of my 1985 20 HP Evinrude over the winter. I installed all new seals and installed a new water pump and housing complete with impeller.

I just took the boat down and back her in and started the engine. Engine started well but no evidence of water coming ot of the small indicator in from the engine base. It appeared that I had the engine down far enough. Water was coming out of the exaust ports in the mid section.

ANy help on this is appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Water Pump Problems

If you have water coming out of the idle relief ports than the water pump is probably working. Its not uncommon to have debrie plug the tell-tale fitting.Try sticking a paper-clip into the hole or shoot some air into it if you have access to shop air.You can check for an overheat condition at the powerhead by removing the cover and starting the motor. Be careful of moving parts and splash drops of water on the powerhead. If the droplets turn to steam you know you still have a problem. This should only take a couple of minutes and keep a listen for the warning horn if you have a remote control. Hope this helps.

I assume you're speaking of the plastic water telltale outlet. Those fitting are prone to clogging. While runing, run a piece of solid wire up it to free whatever might be there.

If need be, remove the fitting in order to clean the passageway thoroughly.

Re: Water Pump Problems

I just took the outlet hose of the engine block and was dry as a bone. I could blow air through the hose.

I did notice however that in front of the mid section facing the transom are 2 large holes (oppisite exaust ports) which appears thet water should enter.

Should I try it againt with the moter deeper in water to allow water to enter?

Water is drawn in at the pick-up screens below the anti-ventilation plate on the gearcase. Are you sure the water pick-up tube was positioned into the guide on the water pump when you installed the gearcase. You may have a blockage in one of the passages in the powerhead. With the motor running you should be able to touch the exhaust cover witout it being to hot.

Re: Water Pump Problems

I just took it back to the launch and took the outlet hose off. Started good but all that came out was air. Air was pulsating but no water. I even inserted water directly into the head from the outlet with a glue syringe and still no water.

I guess I'll ahve to take it apart but why woould there be air coming out and not water? It was working prior to replacing the water pump unit. I had it all apart to replace seals so I figured I'd replace it all since the impeller had a small crack in it.

Re: Water Pump Problems

If the water pick-up tube is not postioned properly it can draw in air from exhaust in the exhaust housing.Hope the info helps.
