Inline 6 250.
The alternator and the bottom pulley are straight, but the water pump pulley looks like it needs to go about a third of an inch towards the engine.

Do I just tighten the four bolts evenly until it looks square?

Those four bolts should be torqued down tight..

Maybe it's me, but your alternator adjustment bracket looks slightly bent backwards matching the water pump pulleys slight offset? Is it possible to move the alternator forward on it's bottom hinges to match the water pump pulley, and bend the alt. bracket forward to match?

How is the water pump pulley in regards to the bottom pulley? The picture makes it look like the alt pulley is the one thats out of alignment.Just hard to tell by the picture.
Also looks like the water pump pulley has been rubbing the front engine mount?

Did you replace the water pump? Just wondering how it got out of alignment.
I have run into this problem on car engine water pumps. The casting was different on the new pump and that threw off alignment.Either way its going to eat belts like it is if they don't fly off.

No I didn't replace it, though it might have been replaced at some time before I acquired the boat.
Belt eating was my main concern when I posted this thread. Replacing the belt looks like a bloody knuckled dirty job. Not to mention loss of water flow and electricity.

Thats the engine that you have to take the front mount loose to get the belt on,so it looks anyway..Bummer!
When you do end up changing the belt get 2 of them and zip tie the extra one on the motor. That way it will be easy the next belt change.
Still need to figure out why its not lined up.
A wire brush on the drill to clean the rust off the pulleys and some fresh paint will help the belts last longer too..

Re: Water pump pulley alignment

bummer about yer belt.

i've got two thoughts.

maybe it's the wrong waterpump? i just went and measured the hight of it from block to where ya bolt on the pully. 4" would be pretty close

the other would be that i think the harmnic balancer is pressed on with a special tool. maybe the balancer moved in or out. or was replaced and not pressed on proper.

if ya want a pic of mine, i can post one up if ya want......

Re: Water pump pulley alignment

Thanks everyone for taking the time to check this out.

Had a friend stop by yesterday afternoon and he knows his engines. He said that it looks like someone stuck an automotive pump on it. He suggested getting some longer bolts and spacers for the pulley and bring it out from the engine and use the front crank pulley as opposed to the rear. Apparently there is an adaptor bracket made for a six volt alternator system that would line the alternator to that front crank pulley as well.

Will update when the work is done.

I agree that it's an automotive/industrial water pump, but not the cure. Put the right pump on there and it will cure your problem. The pump you have there won't last very long anyway and then you will have to change everything back.
The extra groove is for power steering.

I think I just found the pump for 74 bucks.

Don, your signature and the price convinced me.

Looks like you have the spacer on that front mount that can be take out to replace the belt (IF) the bolt will back off far enough to remove it.
Port side just behind the alternater.
Just remove those 2 bolts (DO NOT remove the ones on the starboard side) remove the spacer, change the belt and put the spacer back in.

Sorry I need a little hand holding, but will the above link to a water pump be what I am looking for?

Seems too good to be true as I haven't found anything near that price in other searches.

Thanks everyone. Everything went smooth for the most part. I did have to loosen the starboard side mounts to get the belt through. So it took a bit of block and tackle to get the engine to mount back up to bolts in the first thanks Dons pic.

Gaining some confidence with this boat and engine. Had a leaky metal fuel tank that I replaced when I first got it.

Next step will be a plugs, wires, condensor, points, cap and rotor. Do those need to be marine or can I get away with auto parts?
