Water Pump question solved?

Good evening,

I posted a question awhile back: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=267173

I went to the parts store and the kit sold for the '77 35 HP Johnsons indeed is different than the parts if purchased individually. Could BRP have replaced the original style water pump housing, impeller and plate with the new kit? The impeller for the old pump is still sold though.

Think this is feasible?

Most of the old aluminum pump housings are replaced by kits with plastic housings with stainless steel liners. I don't know whether that applies to this particular motor or not. It' almost a check-with-a-dealer proposition.
If a plastic pump is available, get it. They are far superior.

Re: Water Pump question solved?

Strange, I have a similar problem with my 76 35hp johnson. I bought the listed impeller and when I went to change it it didn't fit. The previous owner might have swapped the lower unit with a later model or replaced the complete pump assy with a different model. I bought an impeller that looked like the one I had as well as a rebuild kit which matched the 78-79 models. I now need to find a new housing as I overheated it last year and it apparently got hot enough to melt the outside of the water pump housing.

I saw your previous post and the listed yet "wrong" impeller is the long skinny one you have pictured (l). My pump assy is the same one you have pictured (r) with the shorter wider blades. My repair kit had all the gaskets and plate but not the housing w/grommet(s). I need to get that type of housing.

Just use the impeller supplied with the kit and when replacing get the same model impeller.

Hate to say it, but I'm glad I'm not the only one who ran across the problem. My water pump went out and melted everything just after I got it, so when I opened it up, it was a learning experience trying to figure out what was there and needed to be replaced.

By chance do you have the part number for the new impeller? The idea that they replaced a lot of the different models with the new pump is evident by the directions that come with the kit for drilling and tapping a new hole, just wish it was more evident that there was the changeup.

Thanks for the words.
