Water pump question

I have a 2001 model 25hp mercury 2 cycle outboard.
I noticed the water pump getting weak, so I took it out and the impeller looked funny. 3 of the fingers went 1 way and the other 3 went the other! Why?
I went to a local Mercury dealer and bought a new pump kit. Well when I opened it the impeller was installed the same way. 3 fingers 1 way and 3 the opposite way! When I questioned it the man tried to tell me that's the way they come! I got him to pull up the exploded view on the microfish and it shows it with all 6 fingers going the same direction as it should.
He seemed a little put off with my questioning it, but finally gave me a fresh impeller instead of the one in the kit.
My question is has anyone seen this before, and should I tell Mercury that someone is shipping them installed wrong? I think after setting on the shelf like that the impeller takes a set and after that might not work right even if you install it right.
Opinions?

Re: Water pump question

The blades of the impeller all go one way. I can't imagine it working correctly like you describe.

Re: Water pump question

Yea I know,
What is bothering me is seeig 2 of them. I thought maybe I wasn't the only one.
I got the whole thing back together and now the trim tab is broken! The screw just never got tight!
Might be duck hunting this wekend with no trim tab!

Re: Water pump question

So what direction should the blades be pointing on the impeller? Counter closewise?
