Hi everyone,
I've gotta 1999 225 Evinrude and it's about time to change the water pump I think. Any ideas how difficult this is? Does the kit come with all the necessary gaskets etc?? Any suggestions are welcome. I'd hate to have it done by a mechanic as it seems the kits are only like 35 bucks. Maybe I should by a repair manual to make sure it's done correctly?? Thanks in advance. :)

Re: Water pump question

one more thing....I'm still using the original pump and it seems to be spitting just fine. Is this a good indicator of how well the pump is doing or is just a good idea to change the pump every few years? I also flush the motor after every use....does this lengthen the life span of the pump?

Re: Water pump question

If you order just the impeller, that's what you get. If you order the complete pump (best idea) you will have everything. As to whether or not you need a shop manual depends on your abilities. The fact that you question the need means you need one. Flushing does not necessarily extend the impeller life. How much sand & muck you run through does. Just because the tell-tale is spitting water does not mean the cooling system is functioning up to par. A stuck open or stuck closed or malfunctioning thermostat can cause proplems.

Re: Water pump question

I'd definitely be changing the waterpump if it is the original. They either work or don't work, so the fact that it is pumping water at the moment doesn't really tell you what condition it is in (ie. it could be on its last legs).

The manual will be extremely beneficial for this and any other DIY project on your motor. The few bucks you spend on it now will pay for itself on your first repair/maintenance procedure.

You can purchase either just the impeller or a kit with the entire waterpump housing including the impeller. In the past I've just changed my impeller and not the housing as it seemed fine.

The only thing you should need is some sort of gasket maker compound to stick the housing back down once you replace the impeller. Can't remember what that stuff is called, but just ask the marine where you purchase the impeller...they can probably show you the bottle of stuff they use.

Good luck!
