I'm fixing to rebuild my waterpump and replace the inlet screen on my 78 johnson 140. I have the service manual and have looked and looked and can't see what holds the inlet screen in. I'm sure I will see it when I get in there, but it would be nice to know before I tear into it later this week. From what it looks like it would be that bearing retainer screw...do you remove that to get the inlet screen out??...or does it just pop out or what?? Thanks guys!

They snap in place from the top and get brittle over time. It is unlikely that you can get it out without breaking it, so when you have the new one, do that (break the old one out) and lift it by prying up from the holes with a piece of steel rod or similar lever. While you have it out, it is a good time to clean the small drain hole below it.

BTW, leave that phillips screw alone.:)

ezeke...thanks alot....After looking in the manual I really started wondering about that screw...I was hoping not to have to mess with it...that makes me feel better. Its really in a bad place though...lol. Looks like it would hold that screen in there. The old one is brittle...I figured it would break out. New one is supposed to be here wednesday..water pump gets rebuilt that day too. That small hole what is the best way to clean it out?? Compressed air??

Loosen any build up at the base of the drain with a screwdriver then use a drill bit that fits to clean the hole - probably 1/8 inch. There is nothing behind the hole except the drain until you hit the other side.
