I found a water pump repair kit for my 1966 Gulf Stream MerCruiser stern drive unit. The Motor hasn't been run for aprox: 8 years. I sprayed some "Blaster" penetrating oil on the nuts, bolts etc. I was able to loosen all bolts etc. The single bolt under the upper drive unit twisted off leaving the threaded part still in the lower unit. I was able to remove the trim tab, the bolts by the trim tab, and loosen the two side nuts. I'm trying to lower the unit, but have only been able to get the part by the trim tab to come down. I havent completely removed the side nuts, but there is about 1/4 inch clearance to work with. I haven't been able to get the unit to come down. Any suggestions?? Thanks... Up date..8-29-09 Am. I found the right "NUT" located rear of lower unit. Lower unit out and on the wooden stand. There is a lot of, what looks like carbon deposits thru-out the lower unit? From the exaust??Or ??
