I have a 1979 johnson 4 hp. seahorse. It was sitting in an indoor garage for 14 years, After cleaning out the tank, carb and new fuel lines. The motor was started for the first time since stored. I had it on the back of my 12' jon boat and ran it for about 30 min. around the lake.
It ran great but, Everyone is telling me to put a new waterpump in it and impellar.the motor never got hot and like I said ran great....what do you think?
thanks,
no4njnk

any piece of rubber that sat dormant for 14 years should be honored that it made one last run with it's ship and then honorably discharged of it's service to you and the motor. For the minimal cost of a new impellar, there is no reason on earth to not replace it. It is a very simple job that one man can do in about an hour. Even if you replace the entire pump housing(which is usually not nessessary) The time and cost factor does not rise much. I say do it do it do it!!!!!!! before it does it to YOU.

Hi,
After 14 years... the lower gearcase oil should be replaced with new oil. Do that as soon as possible.

Replace the impeller. I had the same thing. Nice water at tell-tale but still planned on replacing the impeller. I got the parts, but did not get a chance before vacation. First time I started it on vacation the impeller went south. I had the parts with me, but had to change it in less than excellent working conditions. Why take a chance when it should be cheap and simple.

 Replace it. It is a very easy and cheap fix that will keep your motor running forever. When ever I buy a used outboard the first thing I do is replace the waterpump. And i usually buy a few a week. It is one of the most important parts of an outboard. Also change the gear lube. That should be done seasonly cheap also.!
