The manual calls for draining the gearcase fluid before removal. Is this necessary for a water pump rebuild? Also the assembly of the water pump parts calls for some OMC adhesives (M?)...is their an aftermarket product (permatex, loctite) that will substitute here?

No, you do not have to drain the gearcase for a waterpump job. However, its a good idea to go ahead and change the grease while you are working on it. Always use new seals on the drain and vent screws when you take them out.
As far as adhesives for the waterpump job, I'm sure you will get some other opinions, but I always put them together dry. Just make sure everything is clean from the old pump and gaskets. I do use Hi-Tack Gasket sealant to hold the oring seal in the waterpump housing.

Okay... I got the pump all rebuilt and mounted...now I am having real trouble getting the gearcase back installed!! I think the pick-up tube is engaging but I have still 2" to go and I can't seem to figure it out. The offset on the the top of shift linkage goes away from the motor correct?. What's the secret to getting these back together? Help please!!

The shift rod is probably not going in the hole in the bottom of the cowling pan. Get someone to take a look at it while you try to stab the LU back in, and yes, the bend faces forward.

Thanks...I got it bolted up. I am concerned about one thing. When tightening the two bolts below the cavitation plate the one closest to the main shaft seemed as if it was stripped. The one under the trim tab is solid. Being that they are inches apart and seem to be redundant...am I okay with the way I left it or am I going to see problems later? The thought of dropping the gearcase again is frightening!

In addition...the reason I decided to rebuild the pump is that I got this motor three years ago and didn't know the last time the pump was changed. It also never impressed me with the pressure coming from the telltale. After rebuilding the pump it still seems rather weak. Is this what I should expect for this motor? Thank you for your continued help....you folks are invaluable.
