1973 50hp electric start. When i decided to drop the lower unit, i put everything in a can and when i put it back together last night (almost in the dark) i had 1 extra bolt. This bolt is about the same size as my starter bolts (5/16 x 1 or 1 1/4) but this one is stainless. can anyone think af something i missed? To get it off, i had to remove my starter bolts, remove shift linkage bolt, and lower unit bolts.

1-shift linkage bolt - check
3- starter bolts - check
4- 3/8 lower unit bolts - check
1- 7/16 lower unit bolt - check
1- trim tab bolt - check

now, everything works great but i have this leftover 5/16 ss bolt that is going to drive me crazy if i dont figure out where it came from. Maybe one of you guys can look at a diagram and find it but i cant.

It sounds to me like you missed replacing the bolt UNDER the trim tab...

maybe i did miss it, i could have sworn that when i was taking it apart, there was not one under there cause i remember thinking that it was odd not to have one. maybe i am losing my mind.

I gotta take it all back apart anyway cause the shop gave me the wrong impeller. i was hoping that since i cleaned everything and resealed, i might get by this weekend with the old impeller. it wasnt cracked or anything and still fairly flexable, but i guess since it has permabend to all the vanes, it still wasnt pumping enough water. shop just called and they got the right impeller now waiting to be picked up. there is still hope that i can get on the water this weekend. also, i plan on adding the pissser this weekend and my plan is to add it at the lifting eye. i will try to document it if i have time
