Can anyone give me the run down on how to replace the water pump on a '96 Johnson 112 SPL? I have the OMC repair manual, however it does not give much information on the steps required to replace the pump. Please help, the fish are awating!

Matt

It does, but its not real clear? Do you know if the engine should remain in neutral or forward when removing the lower unit?

It doesn't say, because it doesn't really matter where it is. Put it where you can reach and align it best.... BUT, do not turn the shift rod one way or the other - it is threaded into the inner linkage and is adjusted accordingly. Spinning it can move it out of adjustment...
- Scott

It doesn't matter. Just make sure you dont move the shift rod in or out. There is a measurement and it needs to be checked before the unit goes back on.

On occasion I've found that it helps if the lower unit is in reverse. This gets that shift lever that sets in back of the lower carb down. Might help in aligning the shift rod hole back up to the shift lever pin...can see it better.

This is the type of information I was hoping for, however I getting confused as to the shift rod?

Is there a need to remove a shift rod pin to drop the lower unit, or will the drive shaft and shift rod drop out once the lower unit bolts are removed?

You should either have the pin that needs to be removed or a coupler that must be undone to free the shift rod... The Manual that you have would certainly have that in it....

Iceking ,In case the manual is not clear on the shift rod disconnect procedure ,I'll give a stab at it.The shift rod that from the lower unit to a shift arm coupler located under the lower carb area.Sorta hard to see and get to.To disconnect this coupler, first remove the hitch pin from the 90 degree shift arm.I also, remover the shift cable from the shift arm link to make things easier. This will allow you to push in or to the port side the shift arm causing the coupler to separate and disengage from the shift rod.Once the shift rod coupling is disconnected ,you can then remove all of the bolts that secure the lower unit to the mid-section.the engine will have to be tilted up to allow the unit to be dropped once all of the bolts are removed,as the drive shaft and shift rod will come down with it.Hope that is clear enough. In short ,there is no bolt or pin that needs to be removed from under the carbs. The coupler will simply split apart when the shift arm is thrusted inward.
