Water pump replacement questions, first timer

Hello all,

I'm going to change the water pump on my omc cobra 2.3L I/O drive and I have a few questions as a beginner
1) do I need to remove the sterndrive or can I change the pump while the sterndrive is still on the boat?
2) should I use any gasket sealers? If so, on what parts and what product do I need?
3) should I use a thread anti-seize lubricant or thread lock on the pump housing bolts?

The water pump is behind the back cover so you don't need to remove the drive. I always put some grease on the bolts before I reinstalled.

You may want to replace the rubber O-ring and other parts if they are worn.

Thanks for the response. I've seen a YouTube video and that guy spread gasket compound all over the wear plate as well as the o-ring gasket before installation. Is this recommended?

And you put grease on the bolts? Won't this have the opposite effect of thread lock? Is it like puting anti-seize?
