water pump replacement

I want to replace the water circulating pump on my small block Chevy (1977 305 inboard). I can wiggle the pulley a little on the current pump, and I think that should mean the bearings are bad -- been getting a squeal, and the belts seem to be tight.

question is this: I have a used replacement pump that I dug out and have cleaned up. It spins freely for part of a rotation, but binds at the same spot each time around -- needs to be nudged through to complete the rotation. Is this binding just the impeller acting like it is supposed to act? I'm used to the rubber impellers in outboards, and don't really know how these brass impellers work. That is, there is normal resistance when rotating the shaft of an outboard. Does the impeller on this inboard pump also cause normal resistance?

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like that one could have a bad spot on the bearing race in the pump.

Thanks -- don't have the curent pump off the engine yet, so can't compare action. wish I had a known good one to compare -- anybody out there know if a good one spins freely?
