I will be attempting to change my water pump and impeller on my 28 hp johnson outboard. From reading other posts I will let you know I do have the repair manual but do I need to replace any gaskets or seals when doing this work? I also see talk of replacing t-stats at this time is this necessary? The motor is very clean and runs like a top. I am not looking to do any unnecessary work (if it aint broke dont fix it). I called a local shop and hes thinkin worst case $200.00 for the work so I will try to save a few bucks and do it myself. Any comments or helpful hints would be appriaciated.
Mod# J28ESLEOC. Also the reason Im doing the work is I think the water is taking about 5 to 7 seconds to come out of the pee hole is this normal. I have had the boat for two years and I dont know when anywork has been done to it. Im thinking when I used to start the motor it started peeing sooner is this just my imagination? Sorry for all the rambling but thanks for the advice in advance!!!!

Re: water pump replacement

Take my word for it, as I have a 1989 28 HP and it's a breeze. Should not take you more than 2 hours, even if you go slow.. Follow the Manual and you will have no problem. There are no hidden secrets, but do remember to get the bolt out from under the fin on the bottom of the motor and the other one up inside where the fin was. The lower unit will drop down about an inch and you will see the bolt that is the shift linkage. Unbolt it and off the lower unit comes... Any questions you may have, post them in this same thread...

Thank u rickdb1boat.
On your 1989 is the water intake right ontop of the fin you spoke of? One of my water intakes is mounted right above the horizontal fin on the lower unit. My question is if your intake is there can you use a rectangler motor flusher to flush the motor. I have a round pair and they just cover up the intake.
