got water pump in but before i put it together my factory manual shows a seal at the top of water pump and the thick ruber washer/slinger. is there suppose to be a seal on top of bore insert. The other downloaded drawings from merc and sierra dont show anything. there is a 3/8m gap between the bore cup and the top pump housing.
Does water come out of the pump or does impeller seal it off where drive shaft comes thru. otherwise i am good to go.

Re: water pump seals

That gap between the SS inner cup and the plastic housing is normal, the thick rubber slinger washer goes on top of the cup. The O ring you see may go on the driveshaft ,not in the plastic housing.

It shows the top one too up by the pin and spring. Will scan the picture . It is from the original 1973 manual. So the thick rubber washer seals it at the top? My pump worked but one fin was broke off and that gap is fill with black plastic from overheat on previous impeller as this impeller had one fin gone but it was in the lower pump but dit not look melted so i am guessing p.o. changed it when he burned it up.

BSO,

If you've had a water pump over heat, the housing and base are probably melted, even slightly, enough to need replacing.

The SS cup goes inside the plastic housing and there are some gaps in the top of it. The thick black washer is pushed down on the drive-shaft until it stops on the top of the pump housing. Throw the 'O' ring that would be fitted to the top of the drive-shaft in the bin.... Merc discontinued their use (and the later drive-shafts don't have the groove) because as you install the lower into the upper the 'O' ring catches on the seal in the bottom of the upper housing and holds it open, allowing water in, which will rust out the spines in the bottom of the upper. Not a good look.. :D

On the drawing below...

The cup (32) goes inside the housing (31). The rubber ring(41) pushes all the way down to the top of the housing. Bin the 'O' ring (17)....

I can see how you were confused by that diagram... Not the best I've seen.

That is a diagram from a VERY old system.. They don't put oil seals in the top of the pump anymore....
