Water pump shredded

1993 Evinrude 48HP VE48ESLETE

Previous owner said the water pump was just replaced.
Well yesterday I went to start it and there was
no water pumping. I revved the motor and it started
working for a minute, and then nothing.

Today I pulled the lower unit and it looks like the
impeller is too big, plus it's shredded...


Something doesn't look right...

In your picture of the impeller sitting on the lower unit there should be a plate under the impeller. It's the rectangular plate in this picture.

Forgot to mention. In your picture of the impeller in the housing, it's normal for the impeller fingers to be curled like that. At low speed the fingers make contact with the side of the housing and act like a displacement pump. At high speed the fingers bend away from the side of the housing and the pump now acts like a turbine.

I know people here say that if the impeller is installed with the fingers bent backwards they will correct themselves but maybe not in this case. Or did you run the pump without water? That'll tear up the impeller in a few seconds.

Never ran it with out water. I always submerge the lower
unit in a big trash can. This things looks pretty tore up
with chunks missing, so I'm going to buy a rebuild kit.
Is there a preference between the Sierra and the Mallory
kits?

When it comes to water pumps, your money is well spent on OMC replacement parts (#0438592). Make sure you get the entire kit, not just the impeller.

Yep, I planned on getting the kit. I'll stick with OMC.

I recommend that before you replace all the water pump parts, you back feed water through the system to get out any small pieces of the impeller that are lodge in the water circulation system. You can run water up the water tube as well to make sure water is circulating properly. Hope this helps

Would compressed air work better, or do I risk damage?

I have heard of some people using compressed air but I do not recommend it. For starters air is going to take the path of least resistance so majority of the air will pass around the blockage. Water is heavier and will try to force its way through the blockage. If the blockage is adhered to any walls, the water will act as a lubricant and possibly free up the blockage. Most importantly, if you use high compressed air and the blockage gets worse or completely seals the passage way, that compress air has to go somewhere and it may create a leak in a gasket. Again I have heard of a lot of people using compressed air but I prefer not to use it on anything(Carbs etc,) for these reasons. Hope this helps.

I used compressed air once after a water pump broke up. Put in new impeller, took it out and ran it and still over heated. It was a v4 cross flow. Finally pulled the P/H and found a piece of the impeller blocking a water passage. So much for compressed air.
