I'm going to replace my water pump this weekend, was looking at the parts on IBoats, Do I need the repair kit or just the water pump kit. Didn't want to buy what I didn't need I hadn't put one on this motor and i've run it for 2 years. It's a 1973 Johnson 135 HP.

Most posters will tell you to do a whole water pump kit.I'm not sure what's in the repair kit. I've done lots replacing just the impeller.

Maybe take it down and see what's needed, then get your parts.

DHP

Re: Water Pump ?

I just replaced mine this past weekend. It was easy. It cost me aroung $70 for the whole kit. I changed the housing and all in about 2 hours.

Re: Water Pump ?

The OEM kits with housing contain just that....housing, plate, impeller and any seals or gaskets needed. Take a look at the impeller plate and cup. If they are really grooved out from wear, I'd replace the whole thing with a full kit.

The full kit from BRP, PN439140, is pricey at about $94. This is probably cause of the double tube housing.

If the innards ain't real bad, just rplace the impeller. From BRP, PN777212, round $43.

After market parts are cheaper of course.

Found this in iboats store....

http://www.iboats.com/mall/partfind...d_poid=110962&gd_row=112&**********=713631534

Re: Water Pump ?

If you want to do that this weekend, you might want to price that kit at your nearest J/E dealer unless someone on line will give you a guarantee on the delivery date. Many on-line people will not tell you that it is "in stock". I don't think you will save much money either, considering shipping.

This is about the busiest time of the year for parts.

There is no overall gasket.

BRP Parts Diagrams

If you go to the BRP Parts diagrams for your model, you can see all of the seals on the "gearcase" and "Exhaust Housing" diagrams. You can print the diagrams - set your printer for landscape, though.

'Scuseme KYHunter2,

Why would you put gasket sealant between the lower unit and midsection on a 1973 135HP?

Curiosity has gotten the best of me.

Re: Water Pump ?

I put it at the seam allways , I was thinking '78 not '73. My mistake, I apologize. The reason , I do this is , it comes apart easier . When I have to change , waterpump, seals etc.
KYHunter

Re: Water Pump ?

No sealant required for the LU/midsection joint at all. There's drain holes in the LU below the seam. What are you sealing? Nada! Zero! Use a very small amount of hardening Permatex at the waterpump base/wear plate joint (make sure none gets inside the pump body) and NON-hardening Permatex or TripleGuard grease on all pump hold down screws.

Re: Water Pump ?

Im not going to argue, didnt say it was required to seal . Not once!!! Said ,I DO IT. I have had trouble getting lower unit loose, in the past. Every one Ive used a light coat of sealant on almost falls apart. Do what you like, and so will I.
KYHunter
