I read in some of these post that you should change the water pump every three years. I called my Yamaha dealer and they said that they dont do that any more with the new engines. Mine is a 2000 EFI saltwater series. Should I still change it? I looked in my clymer manual on how to do it. It looks like it is something I can do but I don't know if I should take a chance on doing it myself. Any one run in to this before?

Re: Water pump

hello
if I hustle and feel good its a 45 min operation. the service guide calls for an inpection/replacement every 200 hours or 1 year. i usually reccomnd every 2 years.like I say it does not have to quit just degrade and you have a problem. the hardest part about it on your motor is releaseing the drive shaft coller and lock assy that holds the shaft in place to keep the upper bearing from chattering at low speeds.
good luck and keep posting

Re: Water pump

Thanks,Is the drive shaft coller and lock assembly in the lower unit? And also when I change it do I start it up right after to make sure it works. The reason I'm asking is because I don't have a truck to pull my boat out of the water and where I store my boat I don't have access to water.

Re: Water pump

The driveshaft collar & lock is inside the waterpump housing..

Little tip... Clean the driveshaft, and especially the area on the drive shaft where the lock and collar sets before you re-assemble it.. Any corrosion or junk on the shaft can make that collar a bear to slide back over the lock...

When your ready, get a hose and fire it up on the earmuffs..

Re: Water pump

hello
someplace in all my posts I typed out the exact procedure for water pump replacement on models that use a lock collar. 1995 up v4-v6. cant remember who it was to though. but in it I described how to get the collar off and on again. 99% of the time I can do it without cutting off the collar. the 1% is a beach.
good luck and keep posting
