1986 85hp. I am new to force engines. I was wondering where the water should come out when the motor reaches operating temperature. How long should it take?

Re: water pump

I owned this same engine for several years. The
water comes out the 2 holes on the back of the
lower unit. It's not a steady stream. More like a spit-spray. It also comes out the snout above the prop with the exhaust. I had great luck with this outboard. Just keep it clean a drain all 3 carb bowls at season end. The water pump is easy to change. Just drop the lower unit and it's right there. Do the whole thing and not just the impeller.

Re: water pump

thanks for the reply. Do you mean the holes right below the powerhead that have a sticker that say swirl combustion? how long did it take (at an idle) to start spitting water?

Yes - those are the holes. You should see some spit after a couple seconds of being started. I didn't trust the heat sensor so I installed a temp gauge. Get one thru a merc dealer. If no water is coming out, water pump is probably bad.
