I have a 40 hp Evinrude Model #40555 C, I think a 1975. When I run it in a barrel for about 15 minutes it will pump just fine and then if I shut it off for a few minutes and restart it it will not pump any water. I was thinking possible head gasket. I am looking for your thoughts.

Re: Water pump

When was the pump last serviced ???
Strange that it does what you say though. They generally pump or they don't !!

Re: Water pump

The hub in the impeller may have separated from the rubber and is spinning.

Or the impeller key may be damaged.

Re: Water pump

Is the water level in the barrel well above the water pump?

Re: Water pump

I am back to say I was wrong. I rasied the barrel up and added more water and this motor runs fine. I how ever have not been able to locate the thermostat. Can someone help with that?

Haha well I'm glad nothing was wrong! Can't help you on the thermostat but I like to say that problems most often have simple solutions so not to immediately start thinking its something overly complicated right at first!!

Re: Water pump

The thermostat is located behind the cylinder head. It is towards the top of it, and kind of bulges outwards.
