Quick question to the experts.

I need to replace the water pump in my 1976 MC 165 MC-1 outdrive. The impeller got fried after my muff hose got kinked during a short run time. I want to replace the unit with a water pump kit and I am torn between replacing the unit with a sierra water pump kit w/base for @ $50 or a Merc water pump kit w/o base for about the same price. I cleaned up the water pump base on my OD and it looks pretty good despite some melted edges and gasket residue I needed to scrape off.

Any opinions on the Sierra after market water pump kit applications??

Thanks again!!

If it was severely overheated the seals in the base may be questionable, usually the base is melted /deformed around the drive shaft.

I would go with the Sierra kit with base. Nothing wrong with that kit IMO.

Thank you for the recommendations. I will get the kit with the base to be on the safe side.

When I was cleaning up the old base, I tried removing it from the OD. What would be the best way to remove the old base to prep the OD for the new kit?? Is there any trick to removal??

It looks like it should lift out of the OD but it seems to be very tight and not budging.:(

Thanks again!!

OK sounds good

I just did not want to mess up the OD if there was a special procedure for removing the plastic base!!

Thanks again, you guys are awesome!!
