Just new to the sport and I need help!!
I just picked up a 1968 Johnson 3hp JW-23A and it is suppose to be in top running condition (lots of work done to it 3 years ago).
It will start on the first pull and runs great for about 1-2 min then dies like it is getting no fuel. I give the fuel bulb 1 pump and it starts up again(could the line from the tank to the motor be no good).....?
Also when it is running it will dies at half throttle....?

Last and very important question like other outboards does this motor not have a return water jet to show that the cooling system is working????

Any and all comments will be appreciated, I would like to get out on the water ASAP.

Thanks, John

Re: Water return (cooling system)

No it has no telltale on the cooling system but you should see a few drops, a spray or a mist coming out of the exhaust relef port(s) on the leg.

If pumping the bulb keeps it going check the fuel line for leaks allowing air to get in esp check the connector.
It may be a defective fuel pump.

If when that's sorted you still have trouble with it dying ... (not clear if you mean it dies above half throttle or below) then maybe you will be doing a carb clean. But try choking it a bit... if that keeps it going then very probably in need of a carb clean.

Re: Water return (cooling system)

Thanks for the info and I will try and eliminate the postiblity of the fuel hose. It is about 10 - 15 years old so perhaps it just needs replacing. (so it is more or less an air tight system, from the tank to the motor?)
I will purchase a new hose and bulb tonight and give that a try.

Thanks again.

Vic.S,
Update: Well I went out and bought a new fuel line and bulb took out the motor today and it runs great.
At very low speed it runs like a top no problems and at full (?) it also ran great but I am not sure if it is surely running at full throttle or not. What I mean is that the motor does not seem to be loud enough for it to be at full throttle. I will keep playing with it (lean / rich) and hope for the best.
As of today like I said it runs great, thanks for the info.
