Water Separator on inline 6?

I have a 1987 Merc 115 inline 6. My boat has two built in fuel tanks but it does not have a water seperator. I purchased a Sierra universal water seperator that came with two filters. The filters say that they replace merc part # 35-802893q. It is a 21 micron filter with a high pleat count, whatever that means.

Before I install this on my boat I need some advice.
1. Is this going to restrict my fuel flow too much?
2. Is this the correct filter to use?
3. Will I need to remove my inline filter at the carbs?
4. Is this a bad idea to start with?

is a good idea.you do not need to take off the other one.the filter is a water seperator/filter.make sure the engine filter i clean though.

I got a seperator on my fuel line . i think the trick to it is that it is axcessible . when the fuel and water and dirt build up I just unscrew it apart and dump it out .. prehaps it does do some restricting to the fuel supply .but it is clear and see through . and you can judge when to clean it .the carb micron filters get much pure filtered fuel .. so i went with it .

A must with a built in tank.
1. It will not hurt the fuel flow.
2.It will work great.
3. Keep the inline filters. Make sure that other filters are clean.
4.Good idea. It could save your motor.
5. Welcome to iboats.

High pleat count is talking about how the filter is constructed.
Inlets on filters are from the outside in because you get the largest surface area this way. High pleat count means that there are a lot of zig zags in it's construction (like an accordion......musical instrument) which increases the surface area and increases the change interval.

21 micron is a large mesh opening for fuel but small for water molecules; hence he former passes, the latter is blocked. So, even though the tower likes to suck it's fuel easily (mine did) the large (to fuel/oil) pores in the filter media provide for low resistance.
